Shawn Liotta's new book No Huddle No Mercy

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to see Coach Liotta speak at a Glazier Clinic in Indianapolis. His "No Huddle No Mercy" offense was the heading to all of his clinic talks that weekend. He puts in work. I think he had seven sessions! What struck me was his innovation taken from different teams he coached from Indoor League arenas to the High School field. He and I have kept in touch ever since. So this off season I was excited to see Shawn put all his thoughts into a book. I was able to quickly secure a copy and have started to fully immerse myself. My only negative is my old eyes have trouble with the small font. BUT it is chuck full of content! Plus,  that's why they make "readers" for us old guys... just don't call me (ok) Boomer.

One hundred and twenty six pages of  pictures, charts and diagrams. This book has it all! The foreword by John Jenkins is priceless! The "No Huddle No Mercy" book has ten chapters ranging from Philosophy, Playing Fast, Off Season Implementation, and Troubleshooting issues. I will post a full review soon! Just give my old eyes some more time!

Here are a few sneak peeks!

What I learned from hearing Brent Dearmon LIVE at the Atlanta Glazier Part One

I had the pleasure of listening to Brent Dearmon at the Atlanta Football Glazier Clinics. He was worth the FULL CLINIC. I fully hope Kansas uses what he knows!

If you know me, you know I am a RPO lover. We ran a lot of RPOs at Newton High School and over the last 8 years starting with my favorite stick-draw to the most used one for me Stick-Zone.

But Brent Dearmon has taken RPO, playcalling, development and understanding to the next level.

In part one, I want to give you what I learned from him to make the Zone game better.....

#1 - That he plays with Field and Boundary Wide Receivers. He plays his best WR to the boundary and that his Field WR is his best blocker

#2 He teaches the H-back to duck walk 3 steps, with eyes on the LB, who is the run fitter, before going on to the safety.

#3 He installs IZ for the 1st 2 days because his team is in Helmets he wants to make sure he gets the base of his offense right.

#4 He spoke about how to use the Zone Read Bubble with 2 RBs 1st

#5 How to use Tight Ends...

The TE will take a jab step 1st. With  9 tech 1 step outside & vertical

12 Personnel

11 Personnel

#6 He also tells his RB to Chase the center butt on Zone runs

#7 How do you deal with *man coverage * ??

You can by his book Evolution of the RPO by Clicking on the Picture

The Bolt Offense Deaux

Back in March 2016, 2 years ago. John wrote about Coach Joe Osovet and The BOLT Offense.

Then he was still the HC of Nassau JUCO in NY, that was before he was the hottest name in college and now a member of the Tennessee Vol coaching staff.

For the past three seasons, I have been using elements of his offense and RPO's in my own offense.

That article is one of our most viewed article as coaches and UT fans alike all want to know about the Bolt Offense.

Here is a preview from the Coaches Choice videos if you wanted more information after reading our previous article.

Attached HERE are clinic notes and diagrams on his favorite formations and a few of his RPO's and Secondary Manipulations from a online clinic he did back on twitter.

Coach Osovet does a great job with various inside zone and counter trey plays that we have come to love in the spread.

I advise you to go follow him @CoachOsovet on Twitter.

Secondly, I have been asked to share what practices from the books I have read that I am applying right now to help my team and myself as a coach.

#1 - I take 30 minutes every day, early in the morning when settled at work at my office. To clean off my desk, I do so while listening to music it helps me to focus, remove clutter and see if there was anything on my desk that needs completion that I may have missed.

#2 - My WR coach and myself have been work with WR's on getting better at blocking! We haven't focused on catching or route running... just blocking, deliberate practice trying to make or weakness our strength . Our state allows a coach to work with 4 kids at a time with a ball in the off-season. But we haven't pulled one out. We rotate working with WR's on blocking.

These two items alone, I think are helping me as a coach and my team. I am getting a lot more done and I think we will see an improvement in blocking come this Spring!

I think everyone who has purchased my Coach Tube Class, you can still get 20% off from this blog!

Mark Helfrich at Notre Dame Coaches Clinic 2017

“Leave it better than you found it”

Principles/Logistics of the No Huddle Offense

Tempo/Mindset

Question>> What is your goal?
  • Control mind and tempo of BOTH TEAMS
  • We want the appearance of hyper speed
  • Physical in the run

Meetings quick reactions make quick reactors
  • Players need to ask questions, not always coach driven/lecture
  • Make sure QBs come into meeting with questions
  • QBs learn from each other!

Practice - make it harder than the game
  • It should include unexpected situations
  • Helps to narrow their focus, leave outside distraction off the field

Weight Room - This is where you prepare to become a great football player!

Make your physical fitness a real AND physiological weapon.

This is taught as a fundamental just like blocking and tackling.

Playbook
How many words do use?
Motions?
Shifts?
Formations?

Cadence/Snap Count/True Tempo
  • The offense controls when the ball is snapped.
  • You can manipulate and stress the defense before you snap the ball.
  • You give the QB or the Offensive playcaller a tremendous advantage using the time at the LOS instead of the huddle.

Communication-Pre Snap
How do get plays in?
Signals
Signs
Numbers
Coaches/Players/Managers
Wristbands

Use terms/phrases that your team can identify with…
Holtz/ROCKNE
Kelly/BREY

At Oregon….
We used ONE to signal to LINE
And ONE to signal to SKILLED

Practice
  • Whatever it is...keep it game like as possible
  • Keep your coaching as game like as possible...NO REDOS...have a “NEXT PLAY” mentality
  • Number of plays vs number of minutes (The defense on a different schedule usually…
  • Use walkthroughs tempo for teaching periods to rest/recover and adjust when tired
Game Planning
  • Whatever you run
  • You cater to the QB- sometimes you want to call it; sometimes he checks
  • You make it more difficult to disguise their defense
  • You find or create mismatches
  • Always dictate tempo-mind games and stress
  • Brand new every week in the first series >>>> SHIFTS,ACTIONS,ROUTE,FORMATION

***QBs are becoming too much like a specialized position.
Too much GURU/drill work.
More Competition is needed to be successful!!
QUICKEST WAY to communicate a play?
USE ONE WORD for everything= Formation,Strength,Play PERSONNEL TOO!

TENDENCY BREAK= Have one formation that has each of the following
  • STRONG RUN
  • WEAK RUN
  • PLAY ACTION
  • VERTICAL

I was writing fast and furious anyone else in attendance feel free to fill in the blanks at

The BOLT Offense

I just attended last weekend's Glazier Clinic in Chicago and one of the speakers DEFINITELY had the spark. Joe Osovet, former Head Coach for Nassau Community College. Non stop high energy for the entire day!

From my notes and his Presentations.

  • Foundation is TOUGHNESS…..NOT finesse, gadgets, or tricks!
  • Limit the number of schemes for your offensive line
  • Ability to run the “READ” game out of our POWER PLAYS
  • Make defense defend multiple players during same play (Triples/RPO’s)
  • Be MULTIPLE in our Pre-snap alignment
  • Play Fast –Well conditioned athletes DEFEAT tired talent!
    • MAKE CONDITIONING A FACTOR!
  • Put all the thought process on your QB (He touches the ball the most)
  • DO NOT let defense play down hill
  • Must have ANSWERS on game day

If you have the chance, go see him!  @CoachOsovet

Using One Word Calls in the Tempo Offense by Coach Banks

Coaches, ask me on twitter from time to time, how do you speed up or do meaningful "check with me" for your offense during the game and/or during practice. One thing that helps in a tempo offense, whether you are full speed No-Huddle or you are no-Huddle and then scan the field is one word calls. The question then is how and when do you use the calls. Here is a brief over view of how we use the calls. We basically take 5 calls into the game, each week and we decide as a staff on Sunday in the manner they will be used.

HAWKS – This is our base run game call. 3rd/4th and short, Inside the 5 on 1st down trying to catch the defense off guard, sometimes off an explosive play to get tempo. It is normally a call like Doubles zone with a comet screen,  i.e., jet motion to trips; zone with a bubble. This sort of play we love on 4th and 1, we usually decide as a staff if we don’t convert this third down we are going for it and already know we are calling Hawks

HORNETS – This is usually a pass play that includes a motion and a shift. This is a base pass play you run, like y cross, sail etc.. Find a way to shift and then motion a player and run it. We usually call this play 2 or 3 times max a game.  We catch the defense off guard with something they have not been expecting or have not seen before. Have fun with this one!

BULLET – Is a play we run a lot and we know the defense is expecting it when they see a certain formation. If you are worried that defense might know a signal or a look and can run a play as a 2 way go, call BULLET. Your team knows you are either running zone to the left with a bubble or if you call flip zone to the right with a bubble. Something basic in your offense. Tempo play, no signals involved and gives you a chance to scan the defense and find numbers while not having to go through signals again to change the play.

BULL – This call is similar to BULLET in that is a check with me play, however The formation stays the same and the run call or blocking is the same, but the pass routes can change. So you can call Trips Right Y Cross unless you say Flip Then it becomes Trips Right Sail. A way run 2 of your preferred pass routes that week against the look you deem best.

COWBOY – Is the last One Word Call and it is not a play. It is a formation. Got a formation that you don’t use often and you want to use it for just this week. We make this our Cowboy call, Unbalanced, double TEs, etc.. Something the kids know when they hear it to line up in it. For us in the playoffs, it was 2 TE Trips. We didn’t normally run this formation but when we did in the playoffs, we put certain kids in at TE that we thought gave us an advantage.

This is how we used one word calls in our offense.

Got better ideas, want to talk more than join us at

GAME PLAN nuggets

Here are a few things I have on my game plan to remind me. (and yes it is  multicolored and laminated)

  • Too much information, KILLS the INFORMATION
  • Run what WE KNOW, What we do best!
  • THINK PLAYERS, NOT PLAYS
  • When a play isn't run properly, fix it FIRST, then run it LATER

FIRST DOWN : WIN IT (+4)

SECOND DOWN: GET HALF

THIRD DOWN: BE PERFECT

FOURTH DOWN: BEAST (run) or BEAUTY (pass)

What is on your GAME PLAN??

My favorite run play-Counter

Since I started watching football in the mid 80s I became enamored with the counter series that was made famous by "the Hogs" in Washington.  I fell in love with with it because it was a violent play, it was simple in its execution, and it always seems to go for positive yardage.

When I started coaching high school football Da Coach Mo showed me how to run it out of the spread sets and the rest as they say is history.  It is no secret that all the teams I have coached or am currently coaching run this play and do so with a fair amount of success.

I thought I would place a couple of diagrams for you, the reader to view at your leisure when you are determining if you would like to add this play to your offensive arsenal.

Here is an example of how we would run the counter series against the 30 stack defense.
The center and the RG would double the zero tech to the backside stack backer
The RT would down block to the Mike LBER
The LG would kick out DE
The LT wraps up to the the stack lber over the RT

Obviously this all changes if they opposing team is slanting and or blitzing gaps.
The coaching point on the counter series is everyone has a gap on the frontside and the guard kicks out the first defender off the backside of the tackle

The RB takes a jab step and crosses QBs face running inside the kick out of the guard
The qb holds ball out for the RB and carries out the fake on the backside of the play
The backside slot runs a bubble to influence the defender over them.
The rules on the counter against a 4-1 box
In this scenario the LT and LG combo to the Mike backer
The center blocks back on the nearest adjacent defender
The RG Kicks Out and the RT wraps up to the olber
The action in the backfield is the same as the above example
Remember the front side of the play is gap responsibility and the RB needs to follow the path of the wrapping offensive tackle.
The rules for running the counter are the same as the 4-1 box except the wrapping tackle wraps up to the frontside backer.

Important coaching point on the counter series
The frontside has a gap not a man
If someone is in your gap you have to take them on the frontside
The guard is always kicking out the first person that shows outside of the playside tackle

In order to run this play successfully, you will have to spend a fair amount of time on working on combo blocks and then working to the 2nd level defender.  If you take the time to teach it and work it on a regular and consistent basis you will see the positive effects I have throughout the years.

If you would like to how we run throughout the seasons please click this link to watch my team run it.
