QBs 101

QUARTERBACKS…coaching what could the most difficult position,

YET EVERYONE THINKS THEY KNOW HOW TO COACH QUARTERBACKS!

I am fortunate to be a high school coach that only coaches QBs. My QBs only play quarterback…unless we get a truly special player. Only coaching the QBs give them the advantage of working with me 24/7. We take time to work all the intangibles.

As many of you know I am a firm believer in what Darin Slack and Dub Maddox are doing at THE QBA. I have been using their drills and R4 system for the past eight years. As an educator and a coach the language they use to communicate to QBs is ground breaking. Yes, I know there our other productive systems out there but the QBA fits us perfectly.

How do I start with the QBs? First is mental. I am a former lineman so I keep my quarterbacks grounded. If any of them start feeling high and mighty and simply remind them by calling the DONNA (short for PRIMA DONNA) for the rest of the day.

I tell the 3 Bs and the 1,2,3s and one life lesson.

THREE Bs

BE QUICK The longer you hold on to the ball the worse you become as a QB…this year I have reinvented this theme to “Hesitation is the WORST enemy of a Quarterback”

BE SMART Make the proper read

BE VOCAL Your cadence, your “huddle*” presence and your leadership

1,2,3s I use a number system to tell the difference between the types of ball to throw.

1 DART

2 KEEP AWAY

3 RAINBOW (AIR)

LIFE LESSON

When you get married… You and your wife have separate bank accounts. You never agree about money!

BECOME an INSIDER! It is the best value in football!

Question: Want to be a great coach?

Answer: Listen and learn from other great coaches. I had the opportunity to check out National Football Academies camp this morning. WOW! To have the chance to see Coach Dub Maddox speak and coach in person...AWESOME. Here are parts of his talk.

You must affirm to your players, Let them know "What It takes"

We are looking for leaders and in today's society, they are hard to find.

Coach Maddox talked about the definition of a LEADER and HOW to LEAD.

How to Lead
1. It's not about me
2. "Moving the Chains" can be defined as doing the little things, making sacrifices, and doing things that make you uncomfortable

What do you LOVE about the game?
-You are looking for that affirmation that answers THE question.
-The people that you play the game with!

What do SUCCESSFUL people do?
1. They make it about others (serving) not about themselves.
2. They do the little things RIGHT!
3. They are willing to SUFFER for others

Coach Maddox showed a great collection of movie clips that represented heroes. He defined them as someone that sacrificed, overcame adversity and was mentored by someone.

He ended by saying...

"They are wating for YOU to be great. How do you do it?
STEP UP and LEAD!"
