100 Empty Formations by Chris Parker

Just when a coach thinks they have seen everything... BOOM. Another hidden gem appears on the World Wide Web. Let me introduce Coach Chris Parker. Coach Parker has provided some excellent insight on his website .

Who is Coach Chris Parker?

As I head in the offseason, I look to study other's offenses. I am a verbiage junkie. I am always asking other coaches what do you call power? stick? verts? So when I saw Coach Parker's book on 100 EMPTY FORMATIONS... I was like, whoa. I gotta check this out.

119 pages of information! It is truly a boy's dream, since we all know that boys are visual learners.
The Book is divided into sections.
Part I: The Basics
Part II: Quads and flipping the Strength
Part III: Over
Part IV: Same but different
Part V: The "T" sets
Part VI: Bonus!!!

Oh, by the way, Part VI has 36 more non empty formations.

Each page has a great layout. At the top is the diagram followed by the information including:

  • What is unique about this formation?
  • What problems does this formation give the defense?
  • Notes

What I really loved about the book was the box of goodness titled,
"What plays did Coach Parker like out of this formation?"

Coach Parker's answered varied:
  • No Motion
  • If they over-adjust to Quads
  • If the TE side is better
  • Strong side attack
  • Weak side attack
  • Jet Motion Series

Each diagram had at least 4 answers, so do the Math. 400 answers. But alas, no play diagrams. (The title is 100 EMPTY FORMATIONS...not plays...  maybe a sequel is in the works?)

Here is the layout.

I can't really say which are my favorites... So many choices! I will say I liked "Part IV: Same but different." Diagrams 75-82. What do they look like? Buy the book and find out!

I did message Coach Parker for some film. Enjoy!

It's not all PASS

And more....

Overall, a great book. Well designed. A ton of information. I'll wait for the sequel of diagrams. ;)

TE's = $ in the Passing Game & RPO Clinic Tape

3 Ways Using The Tight End can improve your Passing Game & RPO Clinic Tape

******** IF You are reading this BLOG Post between 11/26/2019 and 12/4/2019, all of my coachtube classes are 65% off for Black Friday and Cyber Monday --> CLICK HERE  ***********

3 Ways we have used the TE to enhance our offense are as follows.

1. Flood is a great concept, very rarely do I run Sprint Out, however this was our most effective Flood Pass, great explosive and great on third and 7+

2. Depending on how much of a weapon your TE is, Trips usually pulls the coverage towards it and that leaves a chance to run weak flood, if teams run what is known as "Steal" coverage.

Combining Smash with Drive, gives us a great weak flood concept...

3. Throwing Verticals has a lot to do with spacing, one of the best ways to formation a defense is using Empty with one or multiple tight ends. Depending on how teams rotate you can get a vertical shot called combined with seam read and shallow allowing for shallow dig as a response or a quick seam shot.

Here is film on all 3 concepts.

RPO Clinic

Here is film on Study Tape for RPO's.. I have been holding on to this one for a LONG TIME. I think you will find something useful or it will reinforce something that you do!

Missouri's Coach Yost

I'm always entertained and enlightened when I get the chance to see Coach Dave Yost.

His basis for offensive planning is "Attack the defense with what they don't like."

He spoke briefly about the principles of the Missouri offense

1) FOUR VERTICALS: This is one of the best ways to get the defense into 2 safeties. Some years it is better than others, but always want to have the threat of it.

2) NO HUDDLE: Keep the defense out of their comfort zone.

3) TEMPO: Change it up, to keep the defense from finding a rhythm.

4) BUBBLE SCREEN: Make the defense defense the FORMATION. Around 90% of the run game has a BUBBLE or NOW built in.

5) SLANT PATTERN: The best route that allows for run and catch up the field. They love to throw it against the blitz, The WR has the chance to catch a short route and turn it into a big gain.

6) SCREENS: The type of screen varies from year to year. Make sure to throw screens to your play-makers!

7) EMPTY: 3x2, 4x1, 5x0... There is no defense designed for EMPTY. Do not use EMPTY for dropback concepts. Use EMPTY for QUICK GAME, SCREENS, and QB RUNS.

8) FORMATION to the BOUNDARY: Defenses don't like to defend strength to the boundary, the MIKE linebacker hates going to the "weak-side". It creates a lot of space for the single WR to the field.

9) UNBALANCED LINE: The last defenders to adjust are the D LINEMEN. They are creatures of habit that like to line up in the same technique. It also affects the Linebacker's gap responsibility.

10) FORMATION ADJUSTMENTS (1 different each week): Bunch or Motion. Use it just for "window dressing". Most defenses' check for BUNCH is a secondary check...Line up in Bunch then RUN the BALL or screen away from the bunch.

11) QB RUN: The type of run depends upon the QB...When the QB can a be a primary ball carrier then the offense is more effective.

12) OPTION FOOTBALL: Speed option has been the best answer for same side RB run.
