FIVE More tips for Offensive Coordinator's to enhance their offense

2 Min Drill

We practiced the 2 minute drill 5 minutes a week on Wednesdays' all season, just to use it one time this year.

But we ran it to perfection when needed. We installed 3 “special” 2 minute offense pass plays and repped

them as much as we possibly could. We got our 5 best kids on the field in the skill spots and went to work.

Find plays that work, get the best kids on the field and rep the situations. The spike, the incomplete, the first down.

Made a difference for us.

4 Minute Offense

This is something I didn’t focus on enough, but I can tell you we will be doing the same thing. Find a set of three

plays and work them. Yes, we will still keep our base offense but this will give us a chance to to make sure they

already know the shift and motion to keep possession of the ball and control the clock.

Walk The Field

We did No Sweat Wednesdays. We walked the field this year as a part of our Wednesday practice.

What does that mean? We ran 24 plays moving the ball every 4 plays and scripting out the down and distance,

including coming out, 3rd downs and goal line. I am a firm believer of playing the game before it happens

and teaching kids football 101.  This allowed us to work in drive starters, backed up, off schedule, penalties,

and third down calls. I think this was one of the most valuable things we did this year.

Drive Starters

We had a heavy focus on P&10. As we started to figure out who we were on offense,

we spent more time getting to our base plays with window dressing and focusing on making sure

we got 4plus yards on the first play of every drive. This doesn’t have to be a re inventing the

wheel situation but if you have a play that you are sure could help you, drive starters, a twist on a play that has

been helpful that season could also be drive starter. Starting drives with successful plays change offenses.

Goalline Offense

Made a commitment to one formation inside the three. Three plays off of it for the majority of the season

and add a third going into the playoffs. We were stopped maybe one time. We did run it in the open field as well.

Below is a sample of the play. We went and found our best players and played them in this formation.

Nothing is more important than scoring touchdowns. Make the defense adjust to you.

After install we practiced this 5 minutes a week all season and had great results.

Part 2 of Game Planning - The thoughts on why...

Before you read Part 2,

So what is the magic number of plays per game?

I can't answer that 100% certain however I think it's  somewhere probably between 36-48

Much like Coach said, the hope is you can run base down plays twice.

With the average number of plays being 65 per game, we try not to take more 48 calls into a game.

How does our plan start out?

22 plays from approximately seven formations MAX.

Find your formation and play advantage and build from there, be able to have answer calls..

For example
Zone Read
Split Zone
Zone RPO
Bootleg

the latter 3 answer the defense reaction to Zone Read.

We like to have 6 RedZone and Goal line special plays. 3 inside the 5 and 3 for when the defense changes into Red Zone Defense. Some it's at the 25 and others it's at the 13.

12 unique third calls,  3rd and 3 or less, 3rd and 4-7, 3rd and 8-10, 3rd and 11+

3 Coming Out Plays

3 Screens/Shot Plays

We may add a trick play into the game plan as well.

This allows us to practice each play multiple times a week before Friday.

Need to know how this works? Best Video you can watch on Practice and Game Planning BELOW!

4 most asked questions about the Spread - ANSWERED!

In this article I will attempt to answer the 4 most asked questions I get about what we do in our offense.

Question 1: On twitter you have talked a lot lately about 12p quickly becoming your favorite personnel package why is that?

12p cleans up the box for your Quarterback and allows RPO's to become 1 on 1 games between wide receivers and cornerbacks. Those are the match-ups we are looking for.

We used two 12p RPO's heavy last year. I want to talk about the one that was apart of my one-word calls!

With 7 lineman you force the defense to put 8 in the box if they intend to stop the run. 8 in the box means that our pre-snap slant or out becomes open and if not we can read our post snap glance. Of course because we want to run the ball we are hoping that the defense decides that 7 defenders is enough in the box.

To Learn more about how I use RPO's  Click Here --> Game Tested RPO's

Question 2: Teams are doing a better good of playing zone stick from 10p how have you adjusted to keep this play working in your offense?

As I answered in Question 1, 12p made the box clearer for us. Here is video of us running Zone-Stick from 12p

If 12p is hard for you to get into, but 11p or 20p isn't then here is one of my favorite ways especially vs 3-4 and 4-2-5 quarters defenses.

Question 3: How are you controlling tempo in your Spread Offense?

1 WORD CALLS!

I tell people all the time, my offense is a No Huddle Offense, that doesn't mean we always go fast. It means we don't huddle.

If we want to increase the tempo at will, this is where the use of one word calls come into play....

Example

Call: Broom
Play: Jet sweep toss to the Boundary
Called: when ball is on the hash closet to our sideline
Clip:

Question 4: How do you game plan the Red Zone?

Whew. I just updated a new article on Red Zone play.

1 tip I will give about the Red Zone is this.

It's Ok to use a RedZone package....

Here is my favorite a single wing formation I got from Rick Darlington we call it Tebow

Spread Offense: Score in the RED ZONE (UPDATED)

Spread Offense: Score IN The Red Zone (UPDATED)

The average HS team has 15 3rd down plays a game and 33% of those in the Red Zone.

Have a plan from 5-20 and for inside the 5.

OK, to have a special package for inside the 5!

We carry 6-8 special Red Zone plays for 5-20, we practice 3-4 a week starting in the pre-season and pick the best 3 to take into the game weekly, if we use 1 in a game we rotate in another one

What additional plays did we find that worked?

1. We developed a inside the 5 package based on the Single-Wing but we also used this all over the field.

2. If you have been reading this blog, you know that I am a heavy snag team we found variations.

We added a variation to our 2 man snag play Thanks to Brennan Marion..

We tagged our snag play with slot fade a lot more this year and it work wonders

Please make sure you check out the clips below, thought process and links!
************************BELOW IS THE ORIGINAL ARTICLE************************
Scoring in the Red Zone is essential to all offenses. Teams that are in the Spread can have problems when they get inside the 20.

I divide the Red Zone into 3 Sections 20-13, 13-5, 5-0. In my experience that is when the defense makes changes, at the 13 and then again at the 5.

#1 High 20-13

Think normally, think Smash and Snag concepts in the passing game and stay normal in the run game.

Smash for us is
#1 WR has an IN
#2 WR has an IN
#3 WR has a CORNER

3 man Snag have worked great for us... pretty standard
#1 WR has the SNAG
#2 WR has the CORNER
#3 WR has the BUBBLE

We had success with 2 new variations this of Red Zone offense due to our use of an H-Back this past season!

#2 From the 13 -5

We run a lot of Inside Zone slice and Run Pass Options.  We used this to our advantage, especially because for us a number of the teams we play play man coverage in the Red Zone. Here are two clips of us using a play-action shot in the Red Zone! We would motion a back into the backfield and fake Inside Zone Slice with a wheel concept.

#3 Inside the 5
Our Best Play this year inside the 5 was getting a H-back and TE in the game with the ability to run Inside Zone Slice Downhill at teams. But most teams will put 9 in the box and go press man on the outside so our QB could throw fade to either side

Have a game plan for the Red Zone in the Spread.
Don't be afraid to have a heavy package inside the 5, H-backs, double tights or Single Wing.

Digital Scouting Reports & More

Digital Scouting Reports

If you are a member of the No Huddle Tempo Practice Page, then you saw the post earlier this summer about what do you give your players for scouting reports during the season.

I like to make my digital and share.

All you end is a Screen Recorder, HUDL and YouTube.

Using Screen-O-Matic, I record a walk-through on HUDL, going through formations and plays, then I upload to YouTube and share with my team in our group chat.

Below is a Sample.

I encourage you to look at this option for the upcoming season for your players....

10 Keys to becoming a better Offensive Coordinator

For the past 6 years, I have have served as Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator and each year I have refined my process of Coordinating the offense. Here are my tips to help you become a better Offensive Coordinator!

#1 - Essentialism

Go hear Podcast with the Author & Article from Forbes !

Limit the number of concepts you RUN!

We use 4 run plays... It could change from year to year! This year the plan is Inside Zone, Dart, Outside Zone and Pin-N-Pull. However last year we ran Buck Sweep and Counter GT.

Limit your schemes. I love the Snag passing Game. Why? It can be used for Multiple Formations. use whatever you like Y Cross, Curls, etc......

#2 - Possession and Ten

I can not detail enough how important I think this down is!  I think it is the most important down in football. In doing a game breakdown for a friend this past season. They played the team that won there region, overall they were 4-2-5 cover 3 57% of the time on base downs, HOWEVER on possession and ten 96% of the time they were 2 high cover 4! Knowing this would have made a difference in his game planning!

#3 - Explosive Plays

You have to create explosive plays to score! Teams that score average 2 explosive plays per drive. The question becomes how to do you create explosive plays! One reason why coaches love the wing-t is because it is system based.

Sweep Play/Inside Trap/Waggle..

Every offense should be this way! You need a base play, a reaction play for a change in defense, a play to deal with the blitz off of it and a touchdown call!

For us we are going to run the zone with a bubble screen, you better believe that faking the bubble and going vertical is in the playbook!

#4 Common Language

How does your offensive coaches and players communicate to each other. How many steps is a curl, how do you explain what is open, you need to really have a deep look at how you communicate all these things!

If you need help and a starting point. I recommend you go buy this book today - What is Open by Dub Maddox!   . Everyone on offense needs to speak a common language!

#5 - Goal line and Red Zone

Yes, you need a plan of attack for it! It could be a separate formation 22p, wildcat, etc.. Or it could be a set of plays! What has worked well for me has been a) determining when the Red Zone begins for us we saw that teams really didn't start to play us differently until the 13 yard line, so that is when our Red Zone thinking really kicked in. b) Study the breakdown on the front and coverages teams gave on scout film to determine what you should expect inside the Red Zone. c) For us we were more successful when we found 6 play variations off of things that we did that we used in the red zone!

There are certain plays in our base offense that work well anywhere, but we have a catalog of plays that we found that work well in the red zone and we work 2-3 a week and rotate them during the season, really changed our offense for the better in the red zone.

Score In the Red Zone

#6 - 3rd Down is really all about protection

I use to just try to get a bunch of plays from people that "worked" on 3rd down and we focused too much on 3rd down. A - the best offenses DO NOT PLAY 3rd down. That should be your #1 3rd down goal. However, study 3rd down and write down the blitzes, what you will find is most DC's have a rhyme and reason to how they blitz on 3rd down. 1st determine how you will protect your QB on 3rd down and then with the rest of the WR's not needed to protect the QB come up with the best pass play to attack the defense to get the 1st down.

#7 - DO NOT ALLOW SACKS

You see how much sacks matter even at the college level! So I learned something from my Brother Coach K . He practices Pass Protection 10 minutes Monday - Wednesday! Take your lineman OL/DL and work stunts and Pass Protection Daily. He does this more than Inside Run. We haven't done it to this level but will more. One nugget when we script plays I picked up from Bobby Bentley was to practice 2 passes for every 1 run. Work on pass protection.

#8 - Group is just as important as Indy

You don't need 30 minutes of Indy only! Find ways to steal time for group no matter the offense.

Spread Teams here are 2 samples...

Wing-T

#9 - YES you must have a script to start the game

Develop a method any method. First 10, First 15. Have a method. Here is mine with my staff

#10 Self-Scout

Always know what plays you have run the last 2 games. Don't let the defense know more than you!

Take a look back, the easiest way is to print out for calls for each individual game from HUDL and then add the last 2 games back together. Know you better than they ever could!

Those are my ten tips to becoming a better offensive coordinator! Doing a few of these or all 10 can make you a better OC this upcoming season! Good LUCK and go score!
