100 Empty Formations by Chris Parker

Just when a coach thinks they have seen everything... BOOM. Another hidden gem appears on the World Wide Web. Let me introduce Coach Chris Parker. Coach Parker has provided some excellent insight on his website .

Who is Coach Chris Parker?

As I head in the offseason, I look to study other's offenses. I am a verbiage junkie. I am always asking other coaches what do you call power? stick? verts? So when I saw Coach Parker's book on 100 EMPTY FORMATIONS... I was like, whoa. I gotta check this out.

119 pages of information! It is truly a boy's dream, since we all know that boys are visual learners.
The Book is divided into sections.
Part I: The Basics
Part II: Quads and flipping the Strength
Part III: Over
Part IV: Same but different
Part V: The "T" sets
Part VI: Bonus!!!

Oh, by the way, Part VI has 36 more non empty formations.

Each page has a great layout. At the top is the diagram followed by the information including:

  • What is unique about this formation?
  • What problems does this formation give the defense?
  • Notes

What I really loved about the book was the box of goodness titled,
"What plays did Coach Parker like out of this formation?"

Coach Parker's answered varied:
  • No Motion
  • If they over-adjust to Quads
  • If the TE side is better
  • Strong side attack
  • Weak side attack
  • Jet Motion Series

Each diagram had at least 4 answers, so do the Math. 400 answers. But alas, no play diagrams. (The title is 100 EMPTY FORMATIONS...not plays...  maybe a sequel is in the works?)

Here is the layout.

I can't really say which are my favorites... So many choices! I will say I liked "Part IV: Same but different." Diagrams 75-82. What do they look like? Buy the book and find out!

I did message Coach Parker for some film. Enjoy!

It's not all PASS

And more....

Overall, a great book. Well designed. A ton of information. I'll wait for the sequel of diagrams. ;)

Coach Parker can also be found on Twitter.

CoachTube Finds 2/9/2020 Edition

An excellent resource when you can make the trip to a live clinic. Coachtube has a plethora of content that has a variety of content.
Here are my current favorites.

Gotta Start with Coach Banks...

I was able to see Coach Rhett Peltier in a clinic a few years ago when I was an Nzone member. Wow! Luck that he put his contact info during his clinic, he responded almost instantly. We have stayed in touch ever since.

Tempo Plays and One Word Calls In Your Offense

Tempo Plays and One Word Calls In Your Offense

Watching a Nike COY clinic video on Dana Holgerson and he said the following.

If you are fast all the time defense loves it.
If you are slow all the time defense loves it.
If you vary it, then defense not so happy......

When I was a young play caller, I had the attitude of tempo meant everything! I wanted to go fast! I wanted to run as man plays as I could, I thought it didn't really mater what I called on 1st and 2nd down, the only down where slowing it down could matter was 3rd down.  As I have progressed I can tell you that is not the same philosophy I have today! Varying tempo and knowing when to use it is important as ever.

A few years ago, I heard Neal Brown at a clinic talk about his Blur package a collection of plays that he would run to use tempo anywhere on the field. Basically, the were base plays packaged and ready to go on a moments notice.

Here is a sample of the Blur package we used in the past as HC.

Blur 1

Blur 2

Blur 3

Blur 4

One thing I wanted to do was combine Tempo with the ability to run downhill. Coach Steve Addazio said it best.

So what did we evolve to you ask?

This is a question I have answered in my new CoachTube class, named Tempo Plays and One Word Calls in Your Offense.

The ability to use one word plays to control tempo. We have about 7 or 8. We call them when most convenient for us.  If you have followed this blog, you know I am a huge fan of zone-stick. In this class I show how it became a one word play for us, where we would rotate the formation to best fit us weekly.

Game Tested RPOS: Explosive Plays & Quick Game Attachments

During Wednesday’s practice, Newton head coach Terrance Banks said that he knew what he wanted to do regarding his two-man quarterback race, but wasn’t ready to share it. We found out Friday night as senior LT Stowers trotted out for the first series of the game, and stayed in throughout, and what a difference it made, starting with the Rams’ first series of the game. It was a 77-yard scoring drive that took all of 47 seconds. The pace looked good. His throws were crisp. It looked as if Newton had been working on the execution of that specific play during the entire bye week and preparation week.

THIS was the start of an article from a game we played this season, when things started clicking! It wasn't that we had been working on a "specific" play all week, it was that our quarterback in his first full time start finally started to understand  HIS options in the RPO game!

XO Clinics all month of February posted a play a day. One of the plays that shared was one of our best RPOs from the past 2 seasons.

We have been able to create explosive plays in our offense by advancing the teaching of our RPOs.

By giving our quarterbacks a pre-snap answer and post-snap answer. Also by attaching quick game tags such as double slants and seam-fin, we have been able to eliminate the need to call quick game or a run play. We are now about to do both, RPOs make up approximately 40% of our offense.

To understand how we got here, let me take you back eight years to the first RPO we used in our offense and still is one of my favorites, go-to plays and crutch.

Stick-Draw, this is what it looked like then.

We still run this play, especially in the 3rd and medium range and if you have a Mobile QB it is great from Empty variations.

From there our RPO Game expanded to what is the #1 ran RPO today, Zone-Stick we still run it and use several variations. Examples are shown here..

I want to share with you a few of our game tested RPOs that you should look at adding to your catalog these plays have really CHANGED and expanded what we do and helped us create more explosive plays plus streamlined our passing package.

3 Day Install Part Deaux

How do you install your offense?

I want to update my original article I wrote on our install process. You can read it here.

This update all started with this question on twitter from Coach Grabowski.
And the majority  of what I said there hasn't changed.

We still do the rotation so it is really a 9 day install.

1A, 2A, 3A
1B, 2B, 3B
1C, 2C, 3C

Our Breakdown is simple.

The 1st series includes:  Zone (Outside / Inside) , 4 Verts, 3 Verts, Hitches, Slants & Rocket Screen
The 2nd series includes: Power (Read), dart, Spacing, Snag, Curls, Smash, Middle Screen
The 3rd series includes: Counter, Draw, Flood, Stick, GL concepts, RB Screens

So let's talk breakdown of the 1st series deeper.

So when we think Inside Zone - we know we want to run these variations

  • With motion
  • To the TE
  • Away from the TE
  • H-back
  • Bluff
  • RPO (pre & post snap)

So when we break down our 3 days we spread this out over each one.

And we do the same thing for each concept that day before designing the install.

Outside Zone

  • No motion
  • With motion
  • Pistol
  • RPO

4 Verts

  • Out
  • Shallow & delay

Hitches - Juke series

I know the install can be done faster and shorter. But this, to me, gives you the chance to build the playbook for that season, get great variation and be precise with what you install.

I thank everyone who has purchased my Coach Tube Class, you can still get 20% off from this blog!

Coach Singleton does it again!!

KISS, also known as Keep It Simple Stupid is a FOUR letter Acronym that likes to keep everything simple. This can also apply to Coach Singleton’s newest course, which is the rule of FOUR. This is not the first course that I’ve "taken" from Coach Singleton and as is the case with his other courses, I was not disappointed. He does a great job explaining every play and has film clips for most plays.

I will say that I love the layout of the Coach Tube. The clinic is divided into chapters for easy review.

I love how Coach Tube adds a PDF of the slides too. I would post them all...but I'm sure Coach Singleton would not be happy! (so just buy it.)

I am a terminology junkie and love to learn how other teams call their plays, motions, and shifts. Here is a slide showing an example of motions.

Coach Singleton has an attention to detail when coaching the plays.

Buy this course! A steal at $14.99 compared to other for $$$$$.

3 DAY INSTALL by Coach Banks

Install your offense and 3 days and just repeat! That has been the wave of what football coaches have been saying for the past few years. This post agrees but disagrees with them! Our install schedule on offense has a 10 plan. Which is broken down into three groups, and each group has three parts. Basically we take each install section and have an A, B and C part. People have asked me why we do it that way. To me the answer is simple. As an educator, I look at teaching my players the same way I teach my students. I would never start off teaching multi-step equations on day one without first teaching them one and two step equations, so why would I do that on the football field?

Our Spring Football and Preseason Install Schedule goes as follows for Ten Days:

Day One     Day Two Day Three
1A 2A 3A

Day Four Day Five Day Six
1B 2B 3B

Day Seven Day Eight Day Nine
1C 2C 3C

Day TEN is SCRIMMAGE.

Pretty straightforward right?
I know you want to know what goes in each group and how we determine what goes in A, B, C.
Here is a sample for us.

RUNS
  • INSIDE ZONE
  • OUTSIDE ZONE

PASSES
  • VERTS
  • LEVELS
  • HITCHES
  • STICK
  • TE DRIVE SERIES

SCREENS
  • JAILBREAKS
  • KEYS

So on Day A: We are installing Base Formations no motions, no tags, simple line up fast and play the basics (one step equations).
When we come back to 1B: We add something all of our motions, our combo plays for example zone/stick & stretch/pop pass, still no tags (two step equations)
Then when we get to 1C: Everything (Verts with shallows, and Fade/Out , stick/nod, hitches w/ corner and fades, etc) (multi-step equations)

This is our modified three day install with groups. 10 day install keeping it easy and simple for our players to learn, after the ten days we meet again as a staff to determine what to keep and what to throw away.

As always if you have questions, find me on twitter: @tbanks1906 or join us at http://nohuddlespread.proboards.com/ and ask questions away!

LOOK and LISTEN

I have always struggled with how to practice No-huddle...Use signals or Codes that the defense starts to learn and cheat (bad defense, bad!). Last week I started to channel my inner ADD. What if I called a code and some signals at the same time? So I would sugar huddle the Offense and tell them "DOUBLES...Listen to me" BREAK.  I would yell our code for ALL HITCH and signal ALL GO. Then WRs run ALL GO...perfect.
"DOUBLES...Look at me" BREAK. I would yell our code for Y Stick and signal Y Cross.
Then the WRs run Y Cross...bingo.

The WRs have picked it up and now the defense can't cheat!

I helped out our young WR group for TRIPS formation...the question always being what does #3 do now, coach?
"TRIPS...ONE and TWO listen to ME, THREE Look at me"
I yell the concept for #1 and #2 WRs and signal #3.

I have started to expand it a bit today and had another assistant stand next to me. We would sugar huddle and I would make the call
"Listen to Me"
"Look at Me"
"Listen to Coach"
"Look at Coach"

Now the next challenge, how to indicate who/what is live and what is dummy during a game!
