Getting "Sloppy" on the Defense

The title of this article was very close to being “Getting Sloppy with Josh Herring”, thankfully; I decided that may be too risqué for the followers of this squeaky clean blog. Many of you already know that I am a clinic rat. I attend at least three, every offseason. I would go to more, but

hit with frying pan

When I first started attending clinics, I was always seeking out college and pro coaches. A high school coach really needed to pique my interest with a snazzy topic title like...

“Score 112 points in 48 minutes”

“The No huddle, Up Tempo, High Octane, Fast Speed Warp Offense”

“Easy way to score points without practicing”

Now, I really seek out the high school coaches because they can’t just recruit 6’5” 290 lineman or 6’2” athletes. So as I scanned the ever growing library at Coaches Edge Technologies, the iBook I choose was Josh Herring’s “Quick Rhythm Option Routes”. I am always looking for minor or easy expansion for the offense.

Josh Herring recently completed his 5th year as Offensive Coordinator and QB coach at Lassiter High School in Marietta, Georgia.

Coach Herring only talks about two routes in this iBook…however, how he pairs the routes with different concepts and various formations making them versatile and flexible. He goes into more detail about the SLOPPY route. He does a great job teaching the route. He goes through multiple clips to show the route in action. This is much more helpful then seeing the same clip over and over!!

The iBook contains 5 chapters with an additional 4 “chapters” of cut-ups.
Chapter 1 Introduction
Chapter 2 Sloppy
Chapter 3 Running Back Sloppy
Chapter 4 Dodge
Chapter 5 Teaching and Drilling Option Routes
Chapter 6 Further Review: Cut-ups for your own study

I like how Coach Herring uses HUDL’s playbook as a template. It provides clean and precise lines and proper spacing.

Coach Herring uses a DIG over the TOP of the SLOPPY ROUTE. This DIG proves a better option for the QB and help keep the defense guessing. Sloppy is the route to use for that player you want the ball and that the defense may be keying on. If the Gift of a HITCH is not there, Sloppy provides THREE WAYS to get your stud into open space.

Is your RB the playmaker?
Then teach him to run the SLOPPY from the backfield!

My favorite way may be SLOPPY from #2 Field WR with CROSS by #3!

The DODGE route only has two ways to get to open space. Coach Herring described it as “we found that Dodge is a route for which more players have a knack.”

Still need to mess with those pesky Linebackers? Then pair CROSS concept with DODGE from the field #2 WR.

.

So there is a little taste of  SLOPPY and DODGE …

You want more? You gotta bust that piggy!

Urban Meyer clinic highlights

From the Notre Dame clinic I attended a few years back...

How to develop a championship team

“Fun to build, hard to maintain”

Article “Leadership by solitude”

Q:  “What makes your program click?”

It is NOT the offensive or defensive scheme!

*Your program must stand for something*

Florida/Coach Meyer four points
  • DEFENSE (fundamentally sound)
  • BALL SECURITY
  • SCORE in the RED ZONE
  • SPECIAL TEAMS must be a priority

Study: When a team blocks a punt, they have won the game 90% of the time

Great Football coaches don’t get overlooked…

Too many young coaches are worried about their title, the money, what position, what level…They do this without CONVICTION or RESEARCH. They feel that they deserve it without putting in the TIME and EFFORT.

Position coaches should have a set of CORE VALUES for each position.

Coaches need to train their team for the WHAT IF moment

-PURPOSE (Spiritually, etc)

-EMOTIONALLY
You need to make a list of ten things you are grateful for. Refer to this list when times are tough.
Give purposely

-MENTALLY (Who/What)

-PHYSICALLY (be in great shape)
To begin the process of changing the culture, you tell the players “If you are not happy, change what you are doing.”
Why do people go back to old ways? People are not prepared for the RISK and DISCOMFORT involved in making that change.
When a player is struggling, find a way for that player to succeed. It may be as simple a making a play in practice.

Are you a TEACHER or PRESENTATOR?

Great Teachers
  • CLEAR:  job description
  • CLEAN: They use the best available teaching tools
  • CONCISE: they break it down to the smallest point/detail
  • DIRECT: reflected by the ability of the player to repeat what the teacher just taught

Spend time in player development!

PROGRESSION of TEACHING

  • Install on the board
  • Use video examples
  • Use walk throughs (Body Teach)
  • Practice Individual techniques and Specific techniques

YOUR PLAN

  • The PLAN should be TIME TESTED.
  • The PLAN should have examples.
  • The PLAN should have testimonials.
  • Believe in it
  • Sell it over and over.
  • Demand It
  • You adapt your Offense and Defense, you don’t adapt yourself!

Using One Word Calls in the Tempo Offense by Coach Banks

Coaches, ask me on twitter from time to time, how do you speed up or do meaningful "check with me" for your offense during the game and/or during practice. One thing that helps in a tempo offense, whether you are full speed No-Huddle or you are no-Huddle and then scan the field is one word calls. The question then is how and when do you use the calls. Here is a brief over view of how we use the calls. We basically take 5 calls into the game, each week and we decide as a staff on Sunday in the manner they will be used.

HAWKS – This is our base run game call. 3rd/4th and short, Inside the 5 on 1st down trying to catch the defense off guard, sometimes off an explosive play to get tempo. It is normally a call like Doubles zone with a comet screen,  i.e., jet motion to trips; zone with a bubble. This sort of play we love on 4th and 1, we usually decide as a staff if we don’t convert this third down we are going for it and already know we are calling Hawks

HORNETS – This is usually a pass play that includes a motion and a shift. This is a base pass play you run, like y cross, sail etc.. Find a way to shift and then motion a player and run it. We usually call this play 2 or 3 times max a game.  We catch the defense off guard with something they have not been expecting or have not seen before. Have fun with this one!

BULLET – Is a play we run a lot and we know the defense is expecting it when they see a certain formation. If you are worried that defense might know a signal or a look and can run a play as a 2 way go, call BULLET. Your team knows you are either running zone to the left with a bubble or if you call flip zone to the right with a bubble. Something basic in your offense. Tempo play, no signals involved and gives you a chance to scan the defense and find numbers while not having to go through signals again to change the play.

BULL – This call is similar to BULLET in that is a check with me play, however The formation stays the same and the run call or blocking is the same, but the pass routes can change. So you can call Trips Right Y Cross unless you say Flip Then it becomes Trips Right Sail. A way run 2 of your preferred pass routes that week against the look you deem best.

COWBOY – Is the last One Word Call and it is not a play. It is a formation. Got a formation that you don’t use often and you want to use it for just this week. We make this our Cowboy call, Unbalanced, double TEs, etc.. Something the kids know when they hear it to line up in it. For us in the playoffs, it was 2 TE Trips. We didn’t normally run this formation but when we did in the playoffs, we put certain kids in at TE that we thought gave us an advantage.

This is how we used one word calls in our offense.
