Bash, Bash and more Bash (Variations Of)

Bash stands for "Backside Sweep" and this one gets people confused sometimes.  You can run Bash on the backside of just about any QB run you can think of from the Gun like we will show in this post, Inside Zone, Counter and Dart. (Thanks To Barry Hoover for the assist here).

The Bash tag has grown in popularity even more at the High School level once teams started to adjust to Power Read. I think one thing that makes Bash so successful is that it uses all 3 of the F's (Fake, Flow and Flood). The QB wants the RB to hit the edge on the sweep, but if the DE/OLB attacks him, it allows the QB to pull with lineman blocking the run play for him. Backers have to be disciplined in reads.

Inside Zone Bash

The first version of bash we will look at is inside zone bash. The offense line will block inside zone one way and the RB will run Sweep to the Backside of zone and the QB will read the end just like he would on zone read.

Above is an example of how Inside Zone Bash looks on paper.

Below are Videos of the Inside Zone Bash Play.

First are Clips from Travis Smith AD/OC of Douglas County High School in Douglasville, Georgia.

The next clips come from Nate Shuttlesworth out of PA.

Counter Bash

Perhaps my absolute favorite way to run Bash is off of the Counter GT scheme. The Gap Scheme gives your QB more angles downhill in my opinion than Zone Bash does where I think he has to wait to find the crease.

I have written about Bash HERE and so has my blog partner who helped me with the play John Konecki. Read Here.

 Dart Bash

2 years ago, I was Head Coach at a school with 2 really good OL who played Tackle. Both are playing next level football. So instead of running GT, we ran a ton of Dart. Which meant we ran Dart Bash instead of Counter Bash.

Here is a mini-clinic I gave on the concept with clips.
