4 most asked questions about the Spread - ANSWERED!

In this article I will attempt to answer the 4 most asked questions I get about what we do in our offense.

Question 1: On twitter you have talked a lot lately about 12p quickly becoming your favorite personnel package why is that?

12p cleans up the box for your Quarterback and allows RPO's to become 1 on 1 games between wide receivers and cornerbacks. Those are the match-ups we are looking for.

We used two 12p RPO's heavy last year. I want to talk about the one that was apart of my one-word calls!

With 7 lineman you force the defense to put 8 in the box if they intend to stop the run. 8 in the box means that our pre-snap slant or out becomes open and if not we can read our post snap glance. Of course because we want to run the ball we are hoping that the defense decides that 7 defenders is enough in the box.

Question 2: Teams are doing a better good of playing zone stick from 10p how have you adjusted to keep this play working in your offense?

As I answered in Question 1, 12p made the box clearer for us. Here is video of us running Zone-Stick from 12p

If 12p is hard for you to get into, but 11p or 20p isn't then here is one of my favorite ways especially vs 3-4 and 4-2-5 quarters defenses.

Question 3: How are you controlling tempo in your Spread Offense?

1 WORD CALLS!

I tell people all the time, my offense is a No Huddle Offense, that doesn't mean we always go fast. It means we don't huddle.

If we want to increase the tempo at will, this is where the use of one word calls come into play....

Example

Call: Broom
Play: Jet sweep toss to the Boundary
Called: when ball is on the hash closet to our sideline

Question 4: How do you game plan the Red Zone?

Whew. I just updated a new article on Red Zone play.

1 tip I will give about the Red Zone is this.

It's Ok to use a RedZone package....

Here is my favorite a single wing formation I got from Rick Darlington we call it Tebow

ZONE STICK by Coach Banks!

"Don’t change the play, change the presentation."
Noel Mazzone

As all of us use the offseason to research changes and updates to our offenses,  I have come to one conclusion, FIND multiple ways to run the same play and not add several new plays. An example of this lies with "America’s RPO"… Zone-Stick!

Here is a clip of the play and three variations.

Play 1: Directly from the 3x1 alignment.

Play 2: Starting in 2x1 pro alignment and using motion to create the 3x1 alignment.

Play 3: Starting in 2x2 and using motion to achieve 3x1 alignment.

Play 4: Another way to window dress the 3x1 alignment is to go Trips with the TE away.
