This entry into the blog will focus on three different ways to use the power blocking scheme in your run game and a play-action that pairs perfectly with it. If you follow me on Twitter you have seen various clips on this and YES, the diagrams and rules are in the book. BUT it's power, who doesn't know it!

1st play up is Power Read, here is a little secret I will let go of. I love Power Read from Empty and the bonus is, this is a key 3rd and short play for me.
Stack the formation run power and attach a now screen. This is simply the easiest way to dress up Power.
I spoke about my love of Power Read earlier. I think the Toss with it, is currently the best way to run it right now.
If you are going to run Power Read, you need to run Rail off of Play-Action. This is the most successful Play Action pass. I have ever had.

Coach JT O'Sullivan's RPO Course

Wow.

Just...

Wow.

Not since the incredible "Mind Blower" by Coach Keith Grabowski, have I been this impressed by anything out in the cyberspace.

I was able "enroll" in this Teachable course. And I was blown away at the sheer amount of content. Over HOURS and HOURS of videos!

Ten Chapters of information include

  1. Welcome
  2. RPO Overview
  3. The Keys To Learning Any RPO
  4. The Run
  5. The Pass
  6. The Option
  7. Why Do RPOs Fail?
  8. How to Protect RPOs?
  9. Bonus Material
  10. Next Steps

Here is a small preview of the course...

This course is not just for a coach, but a fan or player. Coach O'Sullivan details each part of the RPO. What pass options he likes best. Here is one example.

Coach O'Sullivan use the Power Playbook from Just Plays Sports Solutions.

This short article cannot do justice to Coach's course. You just need to "enroll" in it.

You can follow him on Twitter... in two places!

Oh, and he has a YouTube channel that is excellent.

In addition to the RPO course, Coach O'Sullivan has two other Teachable courses. So much content, how can anyone sleep?

And here is a freebie from Coach!

Coach O'Sullivan loves to talk ball... He has been on Coach McKie's channel several times.

Okay so it may be pricey.... whatever...

It is a high end product. No echo or no lighting issues. Annotations are spot on thanks to a Wacom tablet and Epic Pen tool (Soooo cool, I bought both!). BUT, Coach O'Sullivan is always running specials for his courses, be on the lookout. But really the price of the course may be equal to what you could have spent on hotel rooms, beverages, and food this past year. The difference... This expands your mind not your waistline. And never goes away.

Note: Be aware this course is long! It takes time to digest! I did watch sections several times.

RPO stands for Run Pass Option, but in Coach O'Sullivan's course it should stand for REALLY, PRETTY, OUTSTANDING.

Bash, Bash and more Bash (Variations Of)

Bash stands for "Backside Sweep" and this one gets people confused sometimes.  You can run Bash on the backside of just about any QB run you can think of from the Gun like we will show in this post, Inside Zone, Counter and Dart. (Thanks To Barry Hoover for the assist here).

The Bash tag has grown in popularity even more at the High School level once teams started to adjust to Power Read. I think one thing that makes Bash so successful is that it uses all 3 of the F's (Fake, Flow and Flood). The QB wants the RB to hit the edge on the sweep, but if the DE/OLB attacks him, it allows the QB to pull with lineman blocking the run play for him. Backers have to be disciplined in reads.

Inside Zone Bash

The first version of bash we will look at is inside zone bash. The offense line will block inside zone one way and the RB will run Sweep to the Backside of zone and the QB will read the end just like he would on zone read.

Above is an example of how Inside Zone Bash looks on paper.

Below are Videos of the Inside Zone Bash Play.

First are Clips from Travis Smith AD/OC of Douglas County High School in Douglasville, Georgia.

The next clips come from Nate Shuttlesworth out of PA.

Counter Bash

Perhaps my absolute favorite way to run Bash is off of the Counter GT scheme. The Gap Scheme gives your QB more angles downhill in my opinion than Zone Bash does where I think he has to wait to find the crease.

I have written about Bash HERE and so has my blog partner who helped me with the play John Konecki. Read Here.

 Dart Bash

2 years ago, I was Head Coach at a school with 2 really good OL who played Tackle. Both are playing next level football. So instead of running GT, we ran a ton of Dart. Which meant we ran Dart Bash instead of Counter Bash.

Here is a mini-clinic I gave on the concept with clips.

If you coach HS Ball and you want RPOs that have worked and been used for the past few seasons at the HS level, look into my Coach Tube Class Below
